Napoleon ordered the construction of the Simplon Road at the beginning of the 19th century thus making this once-impossible canyon passable. You can also admire the famous Swiss engineering as you get a glimpse of the railroad that goes through the Simplon Tunnel, used by the Orient Express in the 20th century to go between Paris and Istambul.
